Home EV charger installations have grown from a niche request to one of the more common reasons homeowners call for an electrical engineering consult. A few trends are shaping how these installs are approached going into 2027.
What's changing
- Load management devices. Rather than always upgrading the main panel, more installs use load-management hardware that shares available capacity between the EV charger and other high-draw appliances.
- Higher-amperage home chargers. As EV battery sizes grow, demand for higher-output Level 2 chargers is increasing, which raises the importance of an accurate load calculation before installation.
- Utility incentive programs. A growing number of utilities offer rebates tied to off-peak charging, which can influence circuit and charger scheduling setup.
The starting point is still the same
Regardless of which charger or load-management approach you choose, a proper load calculation from our electrical engineering team remains the necessary first step to confirm your panel can support it safely.
